Western Bays History
Western Bays Street Rodders were formed over thirty five years ago, as a breakaway club from Gold Coast Rod and Custom Club in Paraparaumu, and were originally called Porirua City Rodders.
The club was formed to meet the needs of its members who were living in the Porirua area and were unable to travel to Paraparaumu for meetings.
We used our original name for many years, but as time moved on, and more of our members were living outside the Porirua area, it was decided to change its name to incorporate these people, while still being linked to our favourite city - Porirua. We retain many of our original members, trophies, and items of interest from the clubs beginnings.
From organising and running the Porirua Street Drags for over ten years, and then later, due to the loss of our venue in Porirua, we ran the Upper Hutt Street Drags, in conjunction with the Capital Rodders club.
Several of our members hold, or have held national records in Drag Racing ranging from 1/8 mile street drags, DYO, and sportsman classes, right up to the 200+ MPH club - including the New Zealand Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Neil Robertson who held both ET and MPH records for many years.
With the Upper Hutt Street Drags venue now unavailable, our club has become the organiser and promoter of the “Petrol Heads @ Porirua” Hot Rod Show in Porirua. The show has now become a well-known annual event, and grows in size each year.
It is from these activities we have been fortunate enough to build our own clubrooms, which we own freehold. Having outgrown our previous clubrooms, club members had been on the lookout for somewhere that gave us a little more room to stretch out and allow for our growing membership.
Some time ago we found a great place for our members to call home, in the form of an ex cub-scout den in the Porirua area. Being over twice the floor size of our previous clubrooms, it allows a much more comfortable meeting point for our members - with the added bonus of plenty of car-parking and a park-like grass area outside.
Members can now make the most of our strong family-oriented activities in and around the Porirua area.
